Mix Disc Swap
Over on the West Virginia Bloggers Message Board, some of the regulars have been participating in a music swap. Instigated by Scarlet, names were placed in a figurative hat and participants were assigned a member to send a music mix disc. Elvisdrinkmo pulled my name and put together the following mix:
- Art Blakey- Confirmation
- Your the Reason- Hank Williams III
- That’s Just About Right- Blackhawk
- The Caged Bird Sings- Buckshot LeFunk
- Heaven is Missing an Angel- George Straight
- The Sun Doesn’t Shine - Beats International
- By Your Side- Sade
- What a Cryin’ Shame- the Mavericks
- Time Out of Mind- Steely Dan
- Tippy Toin- Loretta Lynn
- Run- George Straight
- Thunderstorms and Neon Signs- Hank III
- John Coltrane- Resolution
- Miss You- the Rolling Stones
I have to be straight-up with you. When I first listened to the tracks I was, well, concerned. I didn’t expect to receive a disc from a stranger with songs that have lyrics such as:
Honey, You’re the reason I cain’t sleep at night
Just a walkin’ the floor
Thinking of you
Smoke cigarettes
And Drink coffee too
Or –
No one else in the world has touched me like you do
It’s super natural, girl, the way I feel when I’m with you
It was a little spooky. But, after speaking with a couple folk, and seeing them roll on the floor in hysterical laughter at me, I accepted the fact that I was being paranoid and just listened to the music. And I’m glad I did.
Although I knew of Hank 3, I have never heard his music. It’s pretty good, in the classic sense. He’s trying hard to be like Hank Sr. I may need to check into some of his albums. The jazz pieces (Confirmation, The Caged Bird Sings, Resolution) were nice changes of pace. I enjoy jazz on occassion, as well as the Blues. And Just About Right — I haven’t heard that in a long time. It was nice hearing it again. Combine it all with Steely Dan and you’re in high cotton!
So, after I got passed the paranoia, I really enjoyed the disc. I hope Elvisdrinkmo understands and isn’t upset. I’ve been around a while and I’ve got bones in closets. Every once in a while they rattle. <chuckle>
Now I have another problem. When I look at the songs I burned on the disc I sent Spike [the lucky one I pulled] I’m afraid he will think I’m a pain loving red-neck girl’s girl who’s looking to get involved! I’ll write on that later.
I’ve got to give more thought to the songs I burn for people I don’t know!

I’m glad you like your disc, Muze.
Believe me when I say I didn’t have any ulterior motives with the lyrics- in fact, I don’t really pay that much attention to lyrics at all unless it’s something really poetic like “The Caged Bird” or something politically charged and I made it point to leave out anything from my politically charged song collection. (Hell, I’m still trying to figure out which song has the “it’s supernatural, girl” line.)
After reading some of those lyrics here, I can see why you might have been creeped out a little. But honestly, I was thinking more of the whole music flow thing (for Sunday mornings on the porch) than I was the actual words in the songs.
Anyway, no offense taken. I’m just glad you liked it.

That would be “Heaven’s Missing and Angel” by George Strait.
“Heaven is missing an angel
That’s the only thing that it can be
Heaven is missing an angel
‘Cause you’re right here with me
No one else in the world has touched me like you do
It’s super natural, girl, the way I feel when I’m with you
I’m in paradise whenever you’re around
Then when I look in your eyes there’s no doubt”
I do like the mix! I have a wide mix of CDs but nothing with those tunes on them. I’ll be spinning it this evening while I enjoy Jack …. Daniels and Coke that is!
