Two Years Too Late

Good grief.

I’m in Beckley today and tomorrow for committee meetings.  They have them every quarter, sometimes more often if needed, but no less.

So, I sat through my two committees and found a quiet space to key my minutes.  (I SuperWrite them then key into Word documents later.)  And my supervisor comes to drag me to the “opening” of the business session.  I knew something was up because I’ve never before been authorized to attend.

So, at the appropriate moment I am ‘recognized’ by my executive director.  He remarks that two years ago an employee should have received a five year service award.  And, the same employee is now going to be leaving to “explore other opportunities.”  [Gag, hack, spit]

So, he calls me up in front of the group.  He asked if I wanted to say anything, I declined.  He hands me a “gift”.  My ’service’ recognition. [A major award.]  A glass business card holder with my name and the agency etched in it.  (If the photo ever comes through I’ll post it.)

Award 2

Give me a break.

I’m leaving the agency in two weeks.  The recognition is two years past due.

My supervisor said she wanted me to hang around and have a photo made of the executive director handing me the gift.  Our PR person wasn’t told so she didn’t have her camera.  I told my boss “If you tell me to do it I will.  But, if you are asking me, the answer is no.”  She said she understands.  But I doubt it.

Now, I’m an official disgruntled soon-to-be-ex employee.  Anything negative I say about the agency will be chalked up in that category.  Thankfully, there are a few folk who know better.  I spent dinner with these folk and even shared a few drinks with them afterward.

Crap, it’s after 11:00 p.m., way past my bedtime.

  • Hey, that’s a bigger gift than the one I got when I left my last job. Here’s a picture of what the company I worked for for 13 years gave me when I left:

  • LOL I didn’t get it because I was leaving. I got it because they had it and forgot to give it to me. It was personalized so they either had to give it to me or throw it out. Being purchased with tax dollars, I don’t think throwing it out was an option.
