Eastern Panhandle Development

I have become more aware (as many WVians have) of the explosion in development in our Eastern Panhandle area.  It is quickly becoming a bedroom community for the DC suburbs.  Many of the orchards and farms have been sold to pay the increasing property taxes.  The properties are then converted to housing developments.

 That’s a shame.

I had the opportunity to visit the area in Jefferson County back in August of 2005.  It really bothered me to see the farms and orchards discarded that way.

West Virginia Public Broadcasting has an interview on a legal battle in Jefferson County regarding a housing development.

  • But what about the rights of the property owners? Is that a lil’ bit a blood leakin’ outta your heart? :)

  • Bleeding-heart — me? No way.

I do hate to see our farmlands turned into housing or shopping centers. People are so short sighted, we need that farmland and we need farms.

What happens when we get as dependent on foreign food as we are oil?

    No farm, No food.
